Dydd Santes Dwynwen or St Dwynwen’s Day celebrates the Saint Dwynwen a Welsh princess from the 4th Century who gave up on true love (her father the king had arranged marriage with another). She fled the arranged marriage and became a nun.
Legend says an angel provided her with a potion that made her forget her true love and turn him to ice. God granted Dwynwen three wishes then. Her first was to have her true love thawed; her second that all those truly in love receive God's help and her last, that she should never marry.
She then headed to the island of Llanddwyn, where she became a nun and established a convent at Anglesey. Dwynwen is considered the Patron Saint of love and friendship in Wales. The Welsh treat this as their Saint Valentine's day.
